The New Forest National Park is situated mainly in Hampshire, partly in Dorset, close to the south coast and extends to about 150 square miles. Once the hunting ground of William the Conqueror and his nobles in the 12th century, the forest now offers a rich and fascinating heritage to complement its tranquil and inviting ambience. If you want to enjoy one of the UK’s most relaxing and peaceful holiday experiences then take a look at our selection of holiday cottages in the New Forest and make the most of your time in this beautiful region.
Consisting of both woodland and heathland, largely remained unchanged over the centuries apart from being shaped by the grazing of ponies, deer and cattle over the years, it is a perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts. There’s a great choice of cottage rentals in the New Forest and by using our extensive feature list you can easily find your perfect one. There are hundreds of miles of cycle trails along way-marked routes and numerous walks throughout the national park with little restricted access. Head over to the New Forest Visitor Centre at Lyndhurst and you can learn all about the forest’s history and find a wealth of local information.
The New Forest wildlife is very special and is supported by the mixed habitation that exists here including forests, heathland and bogs. Possibly the most famous inhabitants are the New Forest Ponies which roam the forest, there are also various species of deer and pigs which root around for fallen acorns plus the usual array of foxes, badgers and birdlife.
In addition to exploring the beautiful forest and spotting the wildlife you can find gorgeous towns and villages located in and around the New Forest. One of them is the picturesque coastal market town of Lymington, situated between Southampton and Bournemouth. Lymington is also a well-known sailing resort with a pair of marinas and sailing clubs. In addition to sailing the town is well known for its interesting shopping and a lively Saturday market.
Apart from its natural attractions there are also some great family friendly visitor attractions here too; of particular note are Beaulieu National Motor Museum, the New Forest Wildlife Park which is a conservation centre for mainly European species, Bucklers Yard, an 18th century village on the banks of the River Beaulieu and Paulton’s Park, the areas only theme park with over 50 attractions and rides.
