Holiday cottages on the Northumberland Coast will bring you to an area of stunning beauty, a nature and wildlife enthusiast’s paradise plus very dog friendly if you do want to take your four legged friend.
The coast was designated an AONB in 1958 and covers 100 miles of coastline from Berwick Upon Tweed down to the estuary of the River Coquet in the North East of England. It boasts 2 nature reserves and as well as bird watching the marine life to look out for includes seals, dolphins and whales if you time it right and attracts lots of Scuba Divers who launch their boats from the busy harbour at Seahouses.
Nearly all the beaches are dog friendly all year round, only some have restrictions at peak times of the year, so you can all make the most of exploring sandy beaches, sand dunes, rocky cliffs and off shore islands. Don’t miss a boat trip to the Farne Islands to get a glimpse of the intriguing puffins or inquisitive seals at certain times of the year, a great day out for all the family. Fishermen can cast in from the shore or catch a boat charter from any of the busy fishing harbours.
A day trip across the spectacular causeway to Lindisfarne is not to be missed. Once the centre of Christianity in Britain it is now a great place to enjoy walks or a visit to the abbey. Make sure you check when high tide is so you can make it back to the mainland and not get stranded.
As well as the spectacular coastal path there are 3 circular walks which start and finish on the coastal path. The excellent public transport makes it very easy to walk sections of the path and get back to your rental cottage on the Northumberland Coast. There are lots of seaside towns and pretty seaside villages to discover all with self catering cottages, such as Walkworth, Alnmouth or Craster with cafes and pubs where you can sit outside and enjoy some locally caught fish and chips whilst enjoying fabulous countryside and sea views.
The county of Northumberland has the most castles in the whole of England and a visit to Bamburgh Castle should be on your list of things to do as it has been a film location for The Last Knight, BFG and Macbeth. The castle and grounds spread across 9 acres on a rocky plateau 45 metres above sea level and the sandy dunes are perfect to catch a unforgettable sunset; it is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country. This is a wonderful part of England so make sure you plan a holiday here very soon.
