The Peak District became the UK’s first National Park in 1951 and covers an area of 500 square miles most of which lies in Derbyshire. Located between the cities of Manchester and Sheffield and with easy access it attracts millions of visitors a year and prides itself on being very family and dog friendly.
The National Park is predominantly an upland area with wide open spaces so a wonderful location plus a huge variety of holiday cottages in the Peak District. You’ll be spoilt for choice when out walking, with challenging treks, hill climbs to lovely views or gentle river valley strolls. The famous Pennine Way starts in Edale and after waking over 280 miles you’ll come to the finish in Kirk Yetholm in Scotland – no mean feat! A lovely day out is a walk from Bakewell to Chatsworth House, the first glimpses of the house are truly memorable before you drop down to the pretty village of Edensor, part of the Chatsworth Estate. The garden and grounds provide a great back drop for some memorable holiday pictures with something to discover at every turn. Chatsworth House is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and well known for its art collections, landscaped gardens and grounds and hospitality.
Ashford in the Water, Whaley Bridge and Castleton are 3 of the most visited villages. Bakewell most famous for its Bakewell Tart is a must and has lots of dog friendly cafes and pubs to choose from.
Matlock was once a spa town and is located either side the River Derwent. With a great variety of shops, cafes and pubs and take a ride on the cable car to the Heights of Abraham and enjoy the fabulous views.
One of the Peak District’s most popular destinations is Buxton famous for its natural spring water. Originally founded by the Romans it now boasts impressive Georgian architecture dating back to the 1780’s. With many individual shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs you won’t have to go far to find one that is dog friendly.
