You can follow the bounds of the old Mercian kingdom, the footsteps of ancient drovers and take in views from Iron Age hill forts. Many of the walks start from the doorstep of your cottage rental in the Shropshire Hills so you won’t even have to use the car.
Great Britain’s longest river runs through the county, the River Severn and the economy centres around 5 major towns the main one being Shrewsbury in the centre of the county with a wealth of culture and history to discover. Ludlow and Oswestry are amongst the older towns with a selection of the famous black and white timber framed buildings found all over the county.
Ludlow as well as being one of the most attractive towns in England is a paradise for food lovers and is the only town in England to currently boast two Michelin starred restaurants. You will love exploring the streets, antique and craft shops and the open air market.
Explore Oswestry a vibrant market town in the North West of the county, you can usually pick up on English and Welsh accents amidst the everyday buzz of the town. Book a guided tour to learn about the history and explore the park and alleyways.
Not to be missed is the Ironbridge Gorge one of Shropshire’s top tourist attractions and now designated a World Heritage Site. With the bridge, gorge and museums to visit it could be an action packed day out, especially for the railway enthusiast’s amongst us.
