Fort Spinney on the beautiful Isle of Wight, is an excellent choice to book your next holiday or short break, nestled just off England’s south coast. The Island is surprisingly easy to reach and only a couple of hours from London, with regular ferries running from Southampton, Portsmouth, and Lymington. You could leave the car behind should you wish, and travel here by rail and high-speed catamaran across the Solent, by booking a combined ticket from any Mainland train station to nearby Sandown.
Yaverland Beach is practically on your doorstep, and voted one of the Island’s best beaches, providing a long stretch of sand and great swimming waters for children and families. Along this stretch you can see the red sandstone through to the white chalk of Culver Cliff, and it is around here that fossil remains can be found; be sure to book a guided fossil walk at the nearby Dinosaur Isle attraction,
It’s an easy short flat stroll from Fort Spinney, past the Zoo, famous for its big cats, into Sandown, a truly traditional British beach resort with a pier, amusements, as well as Sandham Garden’s play area, with go-karting sky nets and crazy golf.
The town is brimming with attractions to entertain visitors, most of them right on the beachfront itself, so you never have to stray too far from the golden sands. Should you enjoy a coastal walk, you can walk the length of Sandown Bay from Yaverland along the seaside revetment all the way to the popular neighboring town of Shanklin. If you are keen on an active holiday, the bay is hugely popular with water sports, and you’ll certainly see people paddle boarding, surfing, catamaran and dingy sailing, windsurfing, and kite surfing, depending on the weather. Outdoor pursuits on the island really are well-catered for and include horse riding, fishing, cycling, paragliding, and golf. There are numerous attractions to discover for all ages on this beautiful sunny island. The Needles landmark attraction is a must-see, with its chairlift, amusement park, boat rides, lighthouse, and coloured sands of Alum Bay. Why not pay a visit to Queen Victoria’s favourite holiday residence, Osborne House and Gardens, or perhaps Blackgang Chine, the oldest themed attraction in the UK? Whatever you decide, one thing is for sure, Fort Spinney and the Island have plenty to offer to make your holiday a memorable one.
