Porthmadog is a busy harbour town, home to the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Steam Railway, a must visit for families and rail enthusiasts alike. You are within easy reach of Black Rock Sands where you’ll find miles of sweeping sands and dunes, and Portmeirion, an enchanting Italian-style village, offering high quality and innovatively designed tableware, cookware, giftware, tabletop accessories and home fragrance products. Explore the white sandy beaches of the Dwyryd Estuary at Portmeirion Village to discover hidden caves, gullies and a flurry of interesting plants. Among the 70 varieties of rhododendrons, are the red-flowering Portmeirion-bred cultivar rhododendron, known as the ’Gwyllt King’. Cook also planted a magnificent magnolia campbellii with its enormous pink flowers and several ginkgo bilobas.
A short drive down the coast is Harlech, Harlech is a very attractive coastal town that boasts award winning beaches, many interesting shops and a vibrant arts and crafts scene but it is chiefly known for its imposing UNESCO World Heritage castle, Harlech Castle was famously involved in a seven-year siege that inspired the famous Welsh song, ’Men of Harlech’. Previous to this, the castle also played a key role in the famous rebellion of Owain Glyndwr in 1404. Today, the remains are managed as a popular attraction for members of the public to visit and extensive beach.
A short drive inland is Blaenau Ffestiniog is a town between the Moelwynion mountains, winding its way along the edges of the rocks, an adrenaline junkie’s delight with Zip World, the largest zip wire zone in the world, Bounce Below, where you can bounce on trampoline nets deep underground in an old slate cavern, and the Stiniog, Antur ’Stiniog bike park is set in the stunning mountains of North Wales and offers 14 fantastic gravity fed mountain biking trails for all ability of rider from novice to world cup racer. The trails are graded from green to black and offers the best mountain bike uplift service in the UK, some even say in the world. Antur ’Stiniog has proudly hosted large-scale events such as the British Downhill Championships. The area has something for everyone of all ages, from scenic walking routes, bike trails, to a whole host of water sports on offer. It really is a diverse area to explore. Beach 1½ miles.
