Part of a Grade II listed building, Granary Cottage offers a delightful and a peaceful location in the heart of the historic village of Troutbeck. The building dates back to 1650 and the cottage occupies the former granary to the adjoining farmhouse. Inside, the property has been decorated, furnished and equipped to a good standard whilst maintaining many original features including massive oak beams. The views over Applethwaite Common and up to Froswick and Ill Bell are stunning. Whilst there is no garden, there is an outside seat at the top of the cottage steps and a bench with outstanding views to the fells just across the road.
Troutbeck village is within the Troutbeck Conservation Area and affords a picturesque setting on the west side of this glorious valley set between Troutbeck Bridge and the Kirkstone Pass. It is an example of a linear settlement of medieval origin with original drinking troughs visible along the road. Townend (National Trust), a traditional Lake District farmhouse, is a short walk away and there are wonderful longer walks from the village including over Wansfell to Ambleside. Holehird Gardens are just two miles away, website info here - www.holehirdgardens.org.uk.The village boasts two excellent hostelries, both of which serve delicious food. An addition to the village delights is the shop and tearoom just round the corner from Granary Cottage. The shop has an excellent stock of food, drink and household necessities, has daily papers (except Sunday) and lots of home made foods are cooked on the premises.
