The cottage is located in a quiet farming village with views of the countryside, Although there is no pub in the village, Kirkby Stephen is a short drive away and offers a range of shops, traditional pubs, and excellent restaurants. There are walks from the Hayloft’s door across low fells and along empty valleys, including part of the Coast to Coast path. The quiet country lanes are ideal for cyclists. For bird watchers and nature enthusiasts Smardale Nature Reserve and Sunbiggin Tarn are close by.
Brough castle is nearby as is Appleby’s and also Penrith’s. Penrith also has the Rheged Centre, a visitor centre with craft, exhibitions, shops, cafe and cinema. The Chocolate Factory in Orton is sure to please chocolate lovers. The scenic Settle to Carlisle railway line is nearby. A round trip from Kirkby Stephen to Settle takes in the best of the dales scenery, including the iconic Ribblehead viaduct and gives time to explore Settle with its independent shops and cafes. The tourist towns of Windermere and Keswick are all under an hour away.
