North Cottage is in the heart of School Aycliffe, perfectly situated for exploring the many local attractions and places of interest. Just a short drive away, you’ll find the market town of Darlington, with its mix of independent shops, cafés and restaurants, theatre and much more. The Cathedral City of Durham, a World Heritage Site, can be reached within a 20-minute drive. Durham is home to many popular tourist attractions including the Lumiere Festival, jazz festival, book week, arts week, the Gala Theatre, castle and cathedral, as well as shops and an excellent choice of places to eat and drink.
In Bishop Auckland, a must see is the outdoor spectacular Kynren - An Epic Tale of England. This historical pageant receives thousands of spectators each year and prior booking is essential. Another popular activity for all ages is the nearby National Railway Museum. For the outdoor enthusiast, cyclists, ramblers, and leisurely walkers will find many walks and cycle paths suitable for all abilities, including Hamsterley Forest, a delightful 2000-hectare site with popular walking trails, including the Gruffalo Trail, as well as cycle trails, orienteering and plenty of spots for a picnic.
Within easy reach are Barnard Castle, Raby Castle, the North East coast, the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks, and the Northumberland Coast.
