Robin Hood’s Bay is an enchanting place, huddled at the edge of the sea there are winding cobbled footpaths connecting rows of quirky cottages. Historically smugglers, sailors, pirates and the press gangs would roam these snickets and gunnels at night. There are still tunnels from the cliffs underground which smugglers would use to get their goods from the village to the boats without getting caught. Exploring this village is like stepping back in time, it has a whimsical atmosphere. There are some quirky independent shops and cafés to discover as well as a couple of popular fish and chip shops and friendly local pubs.
Stepping into the Grade II listed Oakfield Cottage, you have the exposed beams and winding stairs so typical of these historical fisherman’s cottages. The heart of the cottage is the welcoming living room, with a wood burner providing atmospheric warmth. Downstairs there is a kitchen on the lower ground floor, this room is compact yet well equipped. The kitchen has a dining table for four, so you and your loved ones can enjoy home cooked meals together. Up on the first floor you have a king bedroom, as well as the shower room. With stairs leading up to the second floor where you have a family bedroom under the beamed vaulted ceiling. Here in the family room, you have a double bed as well as a single which can be used for an additional guest on request, there are views over the rooftops out to the beach, with the sea and cliff tops stretching out onto the horizon.
As well as having a wonderful beach Robin Hood’s Bay is also a walker’s paradise with the Wainwrights Coast to Coast walk starting or finishing in the village, as well as The Cleveland Way passing through. Take a stroll along the cobbled alleyways and narrow streets or enjoy an exhilarating walk on the cliff-top Cleveland Way before heading out into the rugged North Yorkshire Moors National Park. The old railway track at the top of the village, now a cycle track, follows the cliff tops to Whitby. The neighbouring town is Whitby, boasting an incredible Abbey as well as a long golden beach stretching for miles. There is also the picturesque coastal villages of Staithes and Runswick to explore as well as the surrounding North Yorkshire Moors National Park. This is a fabulous destination all year round, with lots to see and do nearby.
Please note that Robin Hoods Bay is a historical village and the property can only be reached by foot. The parking is at the top of the village and there is a very steep hill leading down to the harbour. The property itself is part of the way down the hill, and there are stone steps as well as a cobbled footpath leading up to the front door. This is part of the charm of the village as it has remained unchanged for hundreds of years. Beach ¼ mile. Pubs and restaurants 4 yards.
