Rebecca Puddle Duck Cottage is an ideal place to relax and unwind in the quiet village of Bassenthwaite, with a stream where the owner’s puddle ducks wander to and fro. It is only a couple of minutes’ walk from the village pub serving local ales and meals and only 15 minutes from the bustling town of Keswick. The cottage is reverse plan, with a double bedroom on the ground floor and an open plan living/dining room, kitchen and bathroom on the first floor. There are views from the dining area and bedroom over the village rooftops to Skiddaw Mountain in the distance. The chunky beams and red brick walls upstairs are a quirky feature - tall guests will have to duck slightly under the beams as they enter the living/dining area! There is parking for one car next to the property.

Situated on a former sheep farm, the property is in the courtyard next to the owner’s farmhouse and 2 other cottages where chickens sometimes wander and enjoy being fed. Guests often enjoy watching the comical antics of the puddle ducks on the nearby stream, or just relaxing with a book or drink and watching the world go by.

This is an ideal getaway where you can walk, climb, sightsee or just relax in winter, or by the stream in summer. Rebecca Puddle Duck Cottage is located in the heart of the village of Bassenthwaite, in the northern region of the Lake District National Park. The cottage is an excellent base to explore some of the quieter corners of the Lake District or the busier locations. The lakes of Loweswater, Buttermere, Crummock Water, Ennerdale, Grasmere and Rydal, Thirlmere, Ullswater and Windermere are between 25-40 mins drive, as well as the closer lakes of Bassenthwaite (5 mins) and Keswick/Derwentwater (15 mins).

Bassenthwaite is 2 miles from Bassenthwaite Lake and 2 miles from the foot of Skiddaw mountain. There are excellent walks for all abilities straight from the door or a short drive away including to Dash Waterfalls or climb some of Wainwrights northern fells. On a clear night, see the stars and moon shining with our dark skies.

There is plenty to do and many places to eat nearby, avoiding the towns and busier villages if you prefer. As well as Keswick and Lake Derwentwater, the following are within 5-20 mins drive: pubs and restaurants, distillery tours or alpaca walking at the Lakes Distillery, refurbished Bassenthwaite Lake Station where you can breakfast, lunch or snack on the train from the Orient Express film, Armathwaite Hall spa, the Lake District Wildlife Park, most of Wainwrights northern fells, Dodd Wood mountain forest and cafe, Mirehouse country house, the ancient church of St Bega on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake.

The castle city of Carlise, Hadrian’s Wall, and the Solway Coast, ideal for dog walking, bird watching or having a picnic, are within an hour’s drive. Bassenthwaite is 15 minutes’ drive from the towns of Keswick and Cockermouth. Keswick is a magnet for the Lake District visitor with lake Derwentwater, crazy golf, mini golf and putting, shops, cafés, restaurants, galleries, a museum, cinema, theatre, brewery and more. Cockermouth is a small local town but still has more than its fair share of things to see and do, including antique shops, livestock auction market, Jennings Brewery, Wordsworth House (the birthplace of the poet William Wordsworth), annual food festival (held in September), and a selection of boutique shops and eateries. Beach 17 miles. Nearest shops in Keswick or Cockermouth 15 minutes’ drive or online supermarket delivery available, pub and restaurant 200 yards.
