Saltburn is stunning, with a glorious, long sandy beach, an iconic Victorian pier, as well as lots of quirky bars, restaurants and independent shops. Take in the views on a stroll along the promenade, you can travel in style to both the promenade and the pier by using the oldest operating water-balance cliff lift in the country! Saltburn is a surfer’s paradise and no matter what the season, you will see figures out at sea riding the waves.
Beside the pier you will find a local surf school where you can have lessons and hire equipment so you can join in the fun. On calm days when the sea is smooth you’ll also get paddle-boarders, there’s nothing like taking in the sunset views whilst out on the water. For younger family members they are sure to enjoy splashing in the sea, or flying a kite as they race barefooted along the sand. There are arcades, as well as a popular fish and chip take away and ice cream parlour beside the shore.
A popular inn along the beach is still famous for its link to pirates and smugglers, and you can get a feel for this as you admire the cliffs that surround the bay, which once had hidden smugglers tunnels. Along the Heritage Coastline there are beautiful beaches, picturesque villages and wonderful scenic walks. Staithes, Whitby, Runswick and Robin Hood’s Bay are all just a short drive away, and for keen walkers, you can follow the Cleveland Way along the cliff tops connecting them all. You are also surrounded by the North York Moors National Park, which has breath taking scenery as well as a network of footpaths and cycle routes. This is a wonderful destination all year round. Beach ¼ mile.
