A lovely peaceful space in which to relax in the picturesque village of Beddgelert, which has an abundance of walks surrounded by impressive scenery. Snowdonia walk Mynydd Sygun from Beddgelert is a relatively short Snowdonia walk which may appeal to visitors to the Beddgelert area who are not looking to climb the higher peaks or to those looking for a walk to occupy a shorter duration. Mynydd Sygun is a minor top which occupies the skyline to the south-east of the Welsh village of Beddgelert. In good visibility, it offers excellent views of some of the better-known Welsh mountains including the Moel Hebog group, the Nantlle Ridge, Yr Aran, the Snowdon Horseshoe, Cnicht and the Moelwyns.
A short walk south of the village, following the footpath along the banks of the Glaslyn leads to Beddgelert’s most famous historical feature ’Gelert’s Grave’. The stone monument in the field marks the resting place of ‘Gelert’, the faithful dog of the medieval Welsh Prince Llewwlyn the Great. There are friendly eateries, a small local convenience store, and not forgetting the very popular ice cream parlour who are famous for their creamy ice cream. The village itself is steeped in history and folk lore. Sygun copper mine is just down the road and is well worth a visit for all ages.
The area is considered the ‘adventure capital of Wales’ and there is an abundance of opportunities for climbing, hiking, walking, cycling and water sports available. You can also ride a steam train on the Welsh Highland Railway to Caernarfon and nearby Porthmadog. Beddgelert is a remarkable tourist attraction, its picturesque bridge crossing the River Colwyn just upstream of its confluence with the River Glaslyn. It is also the nearest village to the scenic Glaslyn Gorge, an area of tumultuous river running between steep wooded hills. Beach 9 miles. Pub and restaurant 175 yards.
