South House is a beautifully furnished, semi-detached cottage, extremely cosy and comfortable and situated in the small village of Lathones, with uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside and an excellent inn serving meals. The property dates back to 1887 and was originally the village church. It is now converted to a very good standard yet still retains character and charm. This is the ideal location for couples, families and friends from which to explore the area and all it has to offer, perfect for walkers, cyclists, nature lovers and golfers.
On the ground floor there is a handy porch for storing outdoor clothing, the welcoming kitchen and dining area has an Aga stove and the kitchen table is large enough for everyone to sit around and plan the next day’s activities. There are two bedrooms on the ground floor, one with en-suite facilities, and a separate shower room. The first floor has a living room with a cosy wood burner, beams and a large vaulted ceiling, and a double bedroom.
The historic city of St Andrews can be reached within a 10-minute drive, making South House ideal for guests visiting friends and family who are based at St Andrews University, or attending one of the graduation ceremonies. A popular tourist location, St Andrews offers a great selection of quality coffee shops, bars and restaurants, excellent shopping, a sandy beach and harbour and many historic buildings. Renowned worldwide as the ’Home of Golf’, and regularly playing host to the Open Championship, this is a golfer’s paradise with its championship courses, as well as the British Golf Museum. Close by are numerous world renowned championship courses for guests to play as well as Hickory Golf club at Hill of Tarvit Mansion.
There are lovely coastal walks on the Fife Coastal Route which take you to award-winning sandy beaches, pretty coves and historic buildings along the way. For keen cyclists, the Millennium Cycle Way runs through central Fife, with miles of quiet country roads, disused railways and forest tracks to explore. Just a little further along the coast is the bustling tourist harbour town of Anstruther and there are daily ferries and boat trips leaving between April and September, that take you to the Isle of May, which is a National Nature Reserve. It is home to colonies of sea birds including puffins, and the surrounding waters are the habitat of seal colonies. For days out, Falkland Palace and Garden are well worth a visit, one of Scotland’s finest Renaissance palaces and steeped in history. Fans of the epic TV series ’Outlands’ will recognise the location which was used as 1940s Inverness, and there are many more locations used in the series to visit in the area.
Within easy driving distance are Dundee, 19 miles, Perth 26 miles and the vibrant capital city of Edinburgh, 41 miles. Or leave the car behind and take the train from Leuchars station where there is a regular service. There is also a local bus to St Andrews from the village. Beach 6 miles. Shop 5 miles, pub and restaurant 150 yards.
