You enter into the kitchen, with sweeping granite work tops, which leads you through into the open plan living/dining room. The beamed ceilings are a reminder of this cottage’s history. On the lower ground floor you have a twin bedroom with an en suite shower. Up on the first floor you have a beautifully presented kingsize bedroom, with a double wardrobe, dressing table and TV. The en suite shower room is modern and inviting. Outside you have your own patio to take in the sunshine, complete with a barbecue.
This fabulous cottage takes its name from the renowned jet jeweller John Speedy, who lived here. The jet which is found in the cliffs in and around Whitby was incredibly popular in the Victorian era, you can still visit one of the workshops which has been preserved as an exhibition, as well as browse the array of jewellers which have hand carved beautiful pieces. Whitby has a host of attractions attracting guests from around the world. This town was inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and there is a dark side of Whitby with ghost walks to both fright and delight. The wonderful Goth Festival takes place twice a year and keep an eye out for other festivals such as the Folk Festival, Whitby Regatta and the Steam Punk Weekend. With many award-winning restaurants, olde worlde pubs and tea rooms, a colourful harbour, iconic Abbey and a glorious long golden beach, this is a great place for all interests and ages. The unspoilt fishing village of Staithes, 10 miles away, nestles into the cliffs of the Heritage Coast and is just one of the nearby hidden beaches to explore. Other hidden gems include Runswick Bay, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Robin Hood’s Bay, each has its own story of pirates and smuggling to tell. There are an abundance of walks and cycle tracks for ramblers and cyclists to take advantage of, including the Cleveland Way, as well as the Esk Valley and its stunning scenery, best enjoyed from the windows of the steam train that travels right into the heart of the North York Moors National Park from Whitby to Pickering. Other attractions for a day out include Flamingo Land, Dalby Forest as well as Alpamare waterpark and spa. The medieval walled city of York is just an hour away and is well worth a visit. This is a magnificent destination all year round, come see for yourself why so many visitors return year after year to Whitby.
