Rising in the southern part of the Monadhliath massif, the River Spey flows through some of the most beautiful scenery before disgorging its cool, clear waters 172km later at Spey Bay in the Moray Firth. It is the ninth longest river in Britain, and the third longest and fastest flowing in Scotland. Renowned for its salmon, the river entices fishermen from all points of the compass to come and pit their wits against the ’King of Fish’. But it is not only the fishing that draws people to Speyside; this area is rich in history with many fine examples of castles and other historical sites, as well as being home to over 50 distilleries, each producing its own distinctive amber fluid. Taking its name from the river through which it flows, Speyside is a walkers’ paradise and a mecca for crafters and artists, who come for the unique quality of light, the vast open skies, breath-taking sunrises and sunsets, and just for the sheer exuberance of the area. Once visited, it is never forgotten. Strathclaggan is the perfect stay for all who come here to indulge their passion for whisky, castle hopping and munro bagging, skiing, off-road driving, kayaking, white water rafting and, of course, fishing. This diverse and stunningly beautiful area is mesmerising in any season, what are you waiting for?
