Taigh Violet Rose is a fantastic, historic former blackhouse that the current owner has renovated brilliantly. It’s now a lovely holiday home with all home comforts. Located on the Isle of Benbecula, which is between North and South Uist in the Outer Hebrides.
The cottage itself has been fully renovated, even including a new thatch to ensure the authentic Blackhouse appearance. Open plan living is the set-up at one end of the cottage, and there is a double bedroom and bathroom at the other end. There is a garden that wraps around the property. Taigh Violet Rose is an excellent, historic property set in a truly outstanding destination.
The island is accessible by ferry from mainland Scotland to either North or South Uist and then a causeway joins the islands. Alternatively, you can fly to tiny Benbecula Airport from Glasgow which is only a couple of miles from Taigh Violet Rose.
Benbecula has many white sand beaches along its west, Atlantic coast. It’s an unbelievable place to go for a wander at any time of the year. In the summer the land and seascape colours will trick you to believe you’re in the Caribbean (the temperature will reassure you of your northerly location!), then in the winter, if you’re lucky on a clear night you may even be treated to a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
Further afield it’s easy to visit Harris & Lewis by hopping on a ferry across the Sound of Harris from Berneray (another island linked to North Uist by causeway), and if you wanted to explore further to the south, a wee ferry links Eriskay (again another causeway linked island to South Uist) with Barra. It is advisable to book your ferry at the time of booking, as they can become fully booked.
Staying at Taigh Violet Rose means you’re very central in the Outer Hebrides archipelago. You can explore a lot from this amazing location.
