Steyning is a small, picturesque market town, just a 10-minute walk from The Barton, originally one of the most important places in the county during the Middle Ages, with its large and prosperous port. Now, it resides about five miles from the coast, up the River Adur from Shoreham-by-Sea. You will find independent shops, an assortment of tea rooms and restaurants, pubs, a well-stocked supermarket and a local butcher all on the high street. Set on the northern edge of the South Downs National Park it offers many miles of bridle and cycle paths, and footpaths to explore. Plenty of pretty rural villages and traditional country pubs to discover along its routes plus visit the nearby Steyning Bowl, Chanctonbury Ring, with its stunning views, and the Iron Age hill fort at Cissbury Ring.
The cosmopolitan city of Brighton is just a 30-minute drive away, where you can take a tour around the Regency terraces, the Royal Pavilion, the trendy Lanes district and book your ticket for the British Airways i360 observation tower and visit the Brighton Sealife Centre. Shoreham-by-Sea, just 10 minutes in the car, is a lovely village offering the Shoreham Fort and harbour to explore plus numerous cafés and restaurants.
Head over the Adur Ferry Bridge to Shoreham Beach; its vegetated shingle is an internationally rare habitat and has been made a local nature reserve. Other must-see places within Sussex include Arundel with its famous castle, RSPB Pulborough, The Bluebell Steam Railway, Ashdown Forest or slightly further afield to the west, you’ll find the historic Chichester Cathedral and Goodwood and Fontwell races.
