he Old Sweet Shop is a spacious, Grade II listed, 18th-century cottage situated on Frenchgate, one of the most popular streets in Richmond, North Yorkshire. The cottage has an interesting history, being the birthplace of John Fenwick, founder of the famous Fenwick’s department stores. It later became a sweet shop, hence retaining the name. With an abundance of original charm and beautiful oak beams throughout, the cottage is tastefully furnished for your comfort and relaxation. Unlike many beamed cottages the ceilings are high and the rooms are light and spacious. In 2023, the beams were all renovated back from black with a very pleasing resulting look which lends the cottage greater warmth and light.
The entrance hall has storage for boots and coats and leads through to a large comfortable living room with feature fireplace and coal effect electric fire and where the dining table is set within the attractive bay window. A broad staircase leads upstairs to two well positioned bedrooms and a bathroom. The front bedroom is a large characterful double with a beautiful brass bed and writing desk. The second bedroom has twin beds and enjoys wonderful views across the rooftops to Richmond’s Norman castle.
