Trevenek Cottage is a detached, single-storey cottage situated in the little village of Slockavullin in the historic Kilmartin Glen, an area of outstanding archaeological importance and one of Scotland’s richest prehistoric landscapes. Its cosy front room has a wood burner, and a small study provides a working area with internet access for the holidaymaker’s own laptop or tablet, and has a telephone (incoming calls only). One bedroom has a zip and link super kingsize bed whilst the smaller bedroom has a double bed.
The cottage is at the top of the village, and final access is via an un-metalled road. A secluded area in the back garden provides a seating area and barbecue, whilst a small public green in front of the cottage provides an extra playing space for children. Kilmartin village, a pleasant 30-minute walk or 5-minute drive away, has a hotel serving food, a museum with gift shop, a café and a garage. The cottage is set in the renowned Kilmartin Glen with its impressive offering of pre-historic sites, including castles, standing stones, burial cairns, hill forts and Kilmartin Museum. Almost right next door is the Moine Mhor, a lowland raised bog of international importance, a rugged and beautiful landscape that is the wild heartland of Kilmartin Glen. The ancient hill fort of Dunadd is just a short distance from the cottage Crinan Harbour is 8 miles away through an attractive winding single track road or a walk/cycle along the canal towpath. Boats can be chartered from Crinan Harbour and there are trips around the islands where it is possible to see whales, porpoise, seals, many sea birds including golden and white-tailed eagles, and the spectacular Corryvreckan Whirlpools.
Just 8 miles away is the local country town of Lochgilphead, which has a variety of specialist shops, cafés and restaurants, a swimming pool, a golf course and a sports centre. Further afield are Oban (the ‘Gateway to the Isles’) to the north, Inveraray, the capital of Argyll, to the east and Campbeltown to the far south on the Kintyre Peninsula.
Outdoor activities, including sailing, walking, fishing, canoeing and riding are available locally. Wildlife includes many woodland birds and birds of prey, beavers, red squirrels, red and roe deer, seals, otters and pine martens. Fresh local seafood abounds in the many delightful eating places. Forest and canalside walks are all within easy access, and the nearby Crinan Harbour offers water-based activities, including fishing and sailing trips.
