The large enclosed garden is superb for long sunny days, and the strutting peacocks who share it with you will keep you entertained for hours. Explore the peace of the surrounding woodland and see if you can glimpse the kingfisher and heron that sometimes fish in the 16th-century castle moat. For that truly magical moment, meals can be taken in the castle by arrangement. Afterward, make your way back to your idyllic hideaway, detour past the 18th-century dovecote before meandering through the charming maze which has been created as a memorial to the witches who met their fate at the Crook of Devon Witch Trials.
