Wren cottage is a perfect romantic bolthole, beautifully presented inside and out. It sits within the grounds of the owner’s residence and beautiful cottage gardens. Previously featured in Country Homes and Interiors, the cottage exudes charm and character. It provides a high level of comfort with a Shaker style kitchen with a tiled floor and modern appliances, cosy living room with wood burner set within an inglenook fireplace and comfortable furnishings to curl up on at the end of the day. There is a double bedroom with feature brass bed, set with crisp stylish bedding ensuring a good night’s sleep and the shower room has a large walk-in shower. Enjoy a morning coffee outside and take in the peace of the countryside. Birds singing and the sound of the stream in the pretty garden. There is a quirky shepherd’s hut, a great place to sit with a book or glass of wine on an evening, or if sleeping under the stars is your thing there’s a small bed in there to make yourself comfortable.
The pretty village of Thirlby nestles within famous Herriot country. Sitting at the foot of the Hambleton Hills, there are beautiful walks from the door. Pack a picnic and set out to explore, head high up into the hills and enjoy the fabulous views around. With plenty of places of interest nearby, Gormire Lake lies at the foot of Whitestone Cliff in the North York Moors National Park and is approximately a 30-minute walk. Sutton Bank is within easy access, call at the visitors’ centre or head out where the footpath joins the famous Cleveland Way. There are numerous cycle routes that take you through stunning countryside. From the village there is a path leading directly into the village of Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe which is about a mile away. A little further away in Felixkirk you will find a pub serving locally sourced produce.
Thirlby is a perfect base to explore further afield. Close by is the market town of Thirsk, with a varied mix of individual shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants and a pretty riverside walk. For cultural outings, visit the stately homes at nearby Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall, abbey ruins at Rievaulx and Byland, and the World Heritage Site at Fountains Abbey. There are good links to explore the Yorkshire Dales and the Moors, or hop on the steam train from Pickering to Whitby. York is just 24 miles away. Shop 5 miles, pub 1 mile and restaurant 3 miles.
