Situated in the heart of High Lorton, this iconic Grade II listed cottage dates back to the early 1800s, when it was once part of the original Jennings Brewery. The name Yan Yan is Cumbrian dialect for One Oak, possibly because of the nearby oak trees. Just outside the cottage is the Whitbeck, flowing alongside the village hall gardens which are open to the public. This peaceful spot is ideal to sit and enjoy the views.
The cottage interior has been upgraded and redecorated throughout in February 2023. Every window has a lovely view of the nearby fells.
The doorstep is a great starting place for scenic local walks. A short distance away is The Whinlatter pass, fabulous for cycling, whilst a trip through Lorton Valley leads to Crummock Water, Buttermere and Loweswater with some of the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District. For keen fell walkers, Haystacks, High Crag, High Stile and Red Pike are close by. A few meters away from the cottage is the village shop which offers local products and serves coffee. A little further away is a local pub serving a variety of local beers, hot meals and a roast on Sundays. For more shops, including supermarkets, cafes and restaurants, Cockermouth is about 8 minutes’ drive away, or Keswick is about 15 minutes over the Whinlatter Pass.
