Nestled on the north bank of the River Tees in County Durham, is the historic market town of Barnard Castle. It takes its name from the 12th-century castle that dominates the city perched on a high rock overlooking the city and river. A haven for antique enthusiasts, the city is lined with independent shops, tea rooms, cosy pubs and mouthwatering restaurants. For foodies, locally sourced produce can be found in the independent specialist shops that line the high street, from bakeries to butchers, and there is a monthly farmers market which is held in the Market Place. The Bowes Museum is an impressive French-style château, surrounded by stunning gardens and parkland. Considered one of the most significant museums outside London, it is home to a collection of European fine and decorative arts. With so much to see and do in this area, it's a great location to be based to tour the surrounding countryside. However you wish to discover this area do it from the comfort of one of our holiday cottages in Barnard Castle.
