Lovers of the outdoors will enjoy all that Flamborough has to offer. This village on the Yorkshire coast between Bridlington and Filey is situated on Flamborough Head, a headland famous for its chalk cliffs and seabird colonies.

Flamborough village itself has charming whitewashed stone cottages and the Norman church of St Oswald’s, a Grade II listed building, and well worth visiting. Inside, you can see the strange memorial in old English text to Marmaduke Constable, a Tudor knight who was a benefactor of the church. The remains of Flamborough castle, a fortified manor house built in 1351 by the Constable family, can be seen from near to the village war memorial.

The coastline offers many opportunities for both birdwatchers and walkers to enjoy the fresh air and amazing scenery. The cliffs of Flamborough Head are home to one of Europe’s most important colonies of seabirds, and in summer, there are tens of thousands of breeding gulls, auks and gannets nesting there. Walkers on the cliff tops will see eider ducks, oystercatchers, gulls and cormorants, as well as the wild flowers, butterflies and moths that are found on chalk grasslands.

The beaches of North and South Landing are ideal for days with the family, with many rock pools to explore and walks along the Heritage Coast. The beaches are popular with fishermen and you may see some of the traditional coble boats that have been used by fishermen in the north east for centuries.

Flamborough has two lighthouses, the first of which was built in 1669 but never used. This was replaced in 1806 by the current lighthouse, built nearer the cliff edge. Tours of the lighthouse last 20 minutes and climbing the 119 steps is worthwhile because of the fantastic views. The old chalk tower is also interesting, having been designed for burning a brushwood fire on the top.
